Collecting More Little Things

Pop top tabs are not the only little things I save.

Don't you just love to pick up hands full of coins?
These are photos of my accumulation of 10 cent coins!

I like to drop my spare change into a container and then as it accumulates, I sort it out by denomination. I have a collection of pennies that I started over 20 years ago. I would drop my pennies in a container and eventually roll them in wrappers. Soon after I started doing that, I decided to go through the pennies and take out the pure copper ones and save only the copper pennies. Our U. S. Mint stopped making the pure copper pennies after 1982. So, when I cash in the rolls, I save the copper rolled coins. I don't know how many rolls I have because they are locked away in a safe place. I do have a container of pennies that I need to search through, but that will be for another day.

Since I just had to replace some major appliances in my home, I can really use some extra money! Now I feel it is time to use these coins that I have been saving for a good cause. I usually save my 25 cent pieces (quarters) until I get several rolls then I use them to buy something that I really need. I just finished wrapping 9 rolls (ten dollars each roll, or $90.00).

To go along with the quarters, I just finished counting and wrapping my 10 cent coins (dimes). I love saving the dimes. I've been saving this collection of little dimes for 4 years. It takes a long time but with being consistent and always dropping them into the dime jar, I've managed to count up 33 rolls at $5.00 each for a total of $165.00 in dimes.
Now, I will be off to make a payment on my new refrigerator, washer and dryer!!

That's a good way to save money and you usually don't even miss it, but it sure comes in handy when you need it. We have a lot of pennies! We were dropping them into two very large jars. We shook them out and put them into one container. It's so heavy, I can't hardly lift it without hurting myself. Don't know what I'm gonna do with them. Wish they were dimes or quarters instead of pennies.

I love collecting change too. It's a habit I picked up from my dad. He would use bills whenever he purchased something so that he could get change back. He then took that change and put into jars. He had LOTS of jars and one day he had us kids sit down and roll them up. I don't remember the exact amount but it was a LOT of $$$, and the best part was that he let us each keep the amount we had rolled! I got a good amount. Too bad for the lazy complainers amongs us, they didn't get as much LOL. Thank you for post it brought up this great memory for me. :)

Great posting and very interesting...also reminds me of the time we once opened a jar of mixed coins and we had enough to treat ourselves and the kids to a day out at Canada Wonderland!

I do this too! The last time I filled up my money box with coins, I ended up with approximately $300 in there. It really came in handy for buying new Winter clothes, that's for sure. Collecting coins is the best way to save money, because you don't even realise you're doing it!

You can now take them to your local Coinstar and it will give you an Amazon.com gift certificate in return.

What's even cooler is it won't charge you the usual Coinstar fee.

Miss Money Bags! Now I know who to come to for a loan! LOL!! My exhusband used to save all of his change. It came in so handy for vacations. We used nothing but coin money to pay for our gas. Maybe I'll have to start saving again. The girls usually steal all of my change.

Change? boy how that piles up. Bet each one of us can look into the bottom of our handbags and find loads of it. Know I can. Great ideas - thanks for sharing...

Wow. I just take them to my bank's free change sorter and exchange it for cash. WE usually get $50-$100 a pop. But I guess the way you do it, its more like therapy. :D

Great way to save. I make it a point to take $20.00 a week from my checking account and store it back. It adds up fast.

Yep, I collect my change too. Use it when I go on vacation as extra spending money. Always nice to have an extra couple hundred dollars to spend.

Coin collecting (a.k.a. numismatics) is a hobby many people are quite passionate about. Before you turn in all of your coins at a local coinstar, you should check out this site http://numismaster.com/ta/numis.jsp You can check on there if you have any coins of collector value.

Happy Collecting!

Great idea! My husband recenlty bought a new bicycle with the change we had saved. Now saving for mine. I have also started entering whole amounts in my register when I enter purchase transactions; saving the 'change' in the checking account.
